American
Chestnut Tree Planting in the Park:
The
American Chestnut Tree, once a thriving native species, is now facing extinction
because it is prone to disease. Our Park has planted thirty (30) pure American Chestnut
seedlings.
As these seedlings mature, the Society will come to our Park and collect pollen
and nuts from the trees. The collected pollen and nuts will be used at one of
the Society's orchards to back-cross with hybrids to produce a disease-resistant
American Chestnut tree. |
